haiku

Wisteria bloom
   dangling mysteriously
      above the trash can

Gnarly
red hawthorn
      —old friend

Poppies
after the rain
            So red!

Heavy peonies—
       By the children’s hospital
             a woman’s crying

Syakuyaku ya |
youzi byoutou | onna no sakebi

Japanese translation: Tokoroten Sasa

Midsummer fiddles’
last tunes fading in the rain
      —yarrow down the way

Lunch in the hot sun—
On a crow’s plumage, briefly,
          hundreds of colors

Japanese buckwheat!
   Only bees delight in it
   now it is blooming

Under the desk lamp
   A moth’s last buzzing, twirling
   on an empty page

First drive in the fall—
High baroque music brightens
                  the sun in the birch

Early in the fall—
Dew beads on a spider web
         —What a precious gift!

Kumo no su ni | sizuku turanaru | arigatasa
Japanese translation: Tokoroten Sasa

A lunar eclipse!
   Under the clear autumn sky
   strangers meet and talk

Starless autumn night—
Again I check the front door
   and pull my robe tight

Motley mountain drops—
   Piercing the clouded stillness
               —the late ferry boat

Bang! Robin feathers
   on the frozen window pane—
               The cat’s tail twitches

Weeping window panes ...
               El día de los muertos
Hissing oxygen ...

November snowstorm
   gradually blending in
   a gardening glove
