About the story
What’s with this “Wren” thing?
The oldest extant version of the fable we are presenting here appeared in 1913 in the first volume of a two-volume anthology of Low Saxon folktales (Plattdeutsche Volksmärchen “Low German Folktales”) collected by Wilhelm Wisser (1843–1935). Read more ...

Y Dryw

Picture of Davydd HarriesRoedd nyth y dryw yn arfer bod yn y garej. Unwaith, roedd y hen rai ill dau wedi hedfan allan—roedden nhw eisiau cael rhywbeth i’w fwyta i’w plant—a wedi gadel y rhai bach ar eu hunain.

Ar ôl tipyn, dychwelodd Tad Dryw adref.

“Beth sy wedi digwydd yma?” meddai e. “Pwy anafodd chi, blant? Rydych chi oll wedi brawychu!”

“O, Dad,” medden nhw, “fe ddaith rhyw fwgi bo heibio gynnau fach. Roedd e’n edrych mor ffyrnig ac erchyll! Fe syllodd i fewn i’n nyth gyda’i lygaid mawr. Fe ddychrynodd e ni cymaint!”

“Mi wela i,” meddai Tad Dryw, “ble aeth e?”

“Wel,” medden nhw, “fe aeth e ffor’na.”

“Arhoswch!” meddai Tad Dryw, “Fe af i ar ei ôl e. Peidiwch a phoeni nawr, blant. Fe’i ddalia i e.” A mae’n hedfan ar ei ôl e.

Wrth iddo droi’r gornel, gwelai mai’r llew oedd yn cerdded yno.

Ond wnaeth y dryw bach ddim ofni o gwbl. Glaniodd e ar gefn y llew a dechrau ei ddwrdio e. “Pa fusnes sy gen ti yn dod i fewn i fy nhy i,” meddai e, “a brawychu fy mhlant?!”

Talodd y llew dim sylw iddo a cherdded ymlaen.

Gwnaeth hynny i’r deryn cegog ei ddwrdio fe’n ffyrnicach byth. “Does gen ti ddim busnes yn bod yno, siŵr i ti! Ac os ddei di ’nôl,” meddai e, “wel, fe weli di! Dydw i ddim wir eisiau ei wneud e,” meddai e gan godi un o’i goesau, “ond baswn i’n torri dy gefn gyda fy nghoes mewn chwinciad!”

A fe hedfanodd e’n syth yn ôl i’r nyth.

“Dyna chi, blant,” meddai e, “rydw i wedi dysgu gwers i hwnnw. Welwn ni mohono fe eto.”
